Decorative Interior Lighting : The Orbital by Viable London

The Orbital, designed by Viable London, is made from three hand blown glass spheres that are then carefully cut and polishing to produce the required openings.

The deceptively simple circle-within-circle forms that give this piece its elegant layering effect stem directly from the function and construction of the piece. The three overlapping holes are just those required to insert successive components inside each other, yet careful placement means that they give a Venn-Diagram-like interaction between the subtly tinted layers.

The overall concept for the piece stems from an appraisal of the way light from a bulb can be softened. Traditionally this is accomplished by using a translucent layer surrounding the bulb, or alternatively by reflecting the light off an opaque surface such that the original light source is not directly visible.

Orbital instead uses internal reflection and refraction to accomplish this diffusion. Using three layers of glass around the bulb causes the light to be reflected and refracted several times before it emerges, spreading it further and reducing the apparent glare.
