The Waterfort by KOW Architecture

t Waterfort (the Water Fort) is a striking building, both in form and location, situated in a unique complex of residential buildings on the banks of the Sloter Pond nearby Amsterdam. The building, which houses 130 high-end apartment units lies as a “veste” on the waters of the Sloter Pond. The entrance into ‘t Waterfort is made through a portal of ample proportions (25m broad by 6m high).

As is the case with most forts, the silhouette of the building is the basis of its identity. The silhouette is reinforced through white contour framing that transitions into a grid work interior of white, open planes. A strong contrast is made between the hard, dark facade of the building and the light, structural elements of the interior. The parking terrain is laid out as a barge on the water, with a garden rooftop, upper deck. Greenery and natural day lighting enhances the entry to the building through a bridge that connects the parking level.

A second bridge for pedestrians leads to an interior courtyard. The materialization of the courtyard is composed mainly of wood, with the exception of its core centre, which is bordered with trees. [via]
